| Course Objectives |
The most common joint disease in the world and one of the oldest, osteoarthritis causes joint pain and swelling and can cause disability in older adults. This course Osteoarthritis: Treatment, provides a general background on osteoarthritis treatment options and outcomes, and is divided into the following sections.
- The first section, PROGNOSIS, describes which joints osteoarthritis affects and how physicians determine disease severity. It then discusses the histological, economic and quality of life of osteoarthritis.
- The second section, PHARMACOTHERAPY, disease pharmacological treatments including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), cyclooxygenase (COX-2) inhibitors, acetaminphen (paracetamol), and other agents.
- The third section, NON-PHARMACOLOGICAL TREATMENT, discusses non-pharmacological treatment options including behavior modification such as weight loss, acupuncture and surgery.
