Diabetes mellitus is characterized
by two important features: patients typically excrete
excess amount of urine, and the urine contains abnormally
high levels of glucose leakage in the kidney. The Greek
derivations of the words diabetes and mellitus actually
mean “siphon” and “honey”, respectively, referring to
the hallmark traits of this disease.
This course is divided into two sections:
- The first section, PROGNOSIS, describes
the typical progression and complicated associated
with the long-term diabetes. The most significant
clinical manifestations affect the eyes, kidneys,
nervous system and cardiovascular system.
- The second section, TREATMENT, describes
both the non-pharmacological and pharmacological
treatments for type 2 diabetes, particularly insulin
treatment.
